The Middelstadt House
1011 5th Avenue
1921, American Foursquare
The Middelstadt house is a classic example of the American Foursquare style. It was built in 1921 for Charles and Aurora Susie Middelstadt. Its simple, square, massed plan became very popular during the early part of the 20th century.
Charles Middelstadt worked for the H.T. Lange Grocery Company for over fifty years, beginning in 1896, and rising to the level of president well before his retirement in 1947. Mr. Middelstadt’s son - Homer, also worked for the company. Together, they worked with the YMCA.
The current owners purchased the house in 2002, made several improvements to it, and conducted much research on the history of the home for its recent designation as a local landmark. Well-preserved within the home are original leaded glass windows, a butler’s pantry with a servant call box, and built-in bookshelves. Other spaces to enjoy include the three-season back porch, the Amish-crafted dining room set, and the restful gardens.
